Though already well known in golf circles, he became a household name, endearing himself to fans across the world, during his epic duel with Tiger Woods at the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines.

When Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate were tied after 72 holes, most of the golf world thought that Tiger Woods would dominate the 18-hole playoff the following day. Well, everyone forgot to ask Rocco Mediate, who put up a fight for the ages - endearing himself to golf fans across the world in the process. After 18 playoff holes, Tiger and Rocco were tied yet again. It took a 19th playoff hole, the 91st hole of the tournament, for Tiger Woods to finally top Rocco Mediate.
