The most striking club in this collection of Water

The most striking club in this collection of Water Irons? Probably the “President” iron, the first club ever designed to help a golfer deal with the plight of a ball in water.

The ‘President’ is a niblick with a gaping hole through the middle of the face (top left in this video). “It is called a President because the hole makes it clear-headed”.

Playing from water is hardly ever considered by golfers today, but it was once a very real part of the game, as there were no rules to allow for casual water during the 19th century when these clubs were made.

This club represents one of the earliest original ideas in the world of golf clubs, an idea born of a mind thinking beyond the realm of tradition and simple evolution.

One of the most interesting antique golf clubs, the Roger-Brown Water/Rake Iron. This exceptionally visual iron was covered under a British patent dated May 10, 1904, and issued to James Henry Roger, a wine merchant from Glasgow.

The term “water iron” identifies a club specifically designed to play a ball from water; the term “rake iron” identifies a “garden rake like” club designed for use in high grass or sand.

At the time, there were no allowances for casual water in the rules. And when there was, casual water rules did not apply if the ball was in a sand trap full of water, sand traps being considered a hazard. In his patent. Roger states his club is designed “for acting on the ball in sand bunkers, long grass, water ditches, and the like.”

This example is currently featured in Lot #8 and originates from the collection of the World Golf Hall of Fame.
